Sir Clement Freud, who became one of broadcasting's most popular figures, had died aged 84.

He was born in Berlin, the son of Jewish parents Ernst Ludwig Freud, an architect, and Lucie née
Brasch. He was the grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and brother of artist Lucian Freud. His
family fled to Britain from Nazi Germany.

During the Second World War Freud joined the Royal Ulster Rifles and served in the ranks throughout
the war. He acted as an aide to Field Marshal Montgomery. He worked at the Nuremburg Trials and in
1947 was commissioned as an officer and married June Flewett (the inspiration for Lucy Pevensie in
C. S. Lewis' children's series the Chronicles of Narnia) in 1950.

One of Britain's first 'celebrity chefs', having worked at the Dorchester Hotel, he went on to run
his own restaurant in Sloane Square. As well as this, he had various newspaper and magazine columns,
and was also a familiar face on television and was a regular panellist on the BBC's Just a Minute
for more than 30 years.

His political career began in 1973, when - against the odds - he won the Isle of Ely constituency
for the Liberal Party. Ten years later he transferred to North East Cambridgeshire, a seat he held
until 1987. He was knighted the same year.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, 5 children and 17 grandchildren.

Forget me not.

It takes a minute to have a crush on someone,
an hour to like someone,
and a day to love someone.....
but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

I am home in heaven dear ones,
oh so happy and so bright.
There is perfect joy and beauty,
in this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
every restless yearning past.
I am now at peace forever,
safely home in heaven at last.
Dear ones, do not grieve so sorely,
for I love you dearly still.
Try to look beyond earth's shadow,
pray to trust our father's will.
There is work still waiting for you,
so you must not idly stand.
When the work is all completed,
He will gently call you home.
Oh, the rapture of that meeting!
Oh, the joy to see you come!
